Latvian wheelchair curlers Polīna Rožkova and Agris Lasmans faced a challenging start at the mixed pairs competition of the Paralympic Games held in Milan and Cortina. They lost their opening match to a US duo by a score of 6 to 11. The match began with the Latvians trailing by 0-3 after the first two ends. However, in an impressive third end, they reclaimed their standing by scoring four points, briefly leading to a 4-3 before the Americans responded strongly with three points in the fourth end.
The competition intensified as the Latvians managed to tie the game at 6-6 after scoring points in the following two ends. Unfortunately, the momentum shifted again when the Americans secured one point in the seventh end and decisively took control in the eighth by adding four more points, solidifying their victory. This match sets a challenging tone for Rožkova and Lasmans as they continue in the tournament against various strong teams including China, Great Britain, Estonia, Italy, South Korea, and Japan.
Looking forward, the competition is fierce, as only the top four teams will advance to contend for medals at the Games. In addition to the mixed pairs event, Latvia will also be represented in the wheelchair curling competitions with a mixed team comprising Elija Asniņa, Linda Meijere, Adelaida Killiana, Ojārs Briedis, and Sergejs D. The outcome of this initial match underscores the competitive nature of the Paralympic curling events, where every point continues to hold significant importance in shaping the path towards the medals.
