Ice movement continues in rivers in western Latvia, causing blockages in places

In western Latvia, ice movement in rivers is ongoing, with ice blockages forming in some areas due to rising water levels from melting snow.

In western Latvia, the dynamics of ice in rivers have been intensifying as the melting of snow and ice brings about an increase in river flow. The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre has warned of ice movement as well as the formation of ice blockages, particularly in the regions of Kurzeme and central Latvia. A yellow warning for water levels has been issued, indicating potential flooding is on the rise as certain riverbanks and low-lying areas are inundated with water from rising levels.

As we enter the first days of March, meteorologists indicate that in western and central parts of Latvia, the melting process of snow and ice is contributing significantly to the increase in river levels. Many rivers are currently experiencing rising water levels, especially in Kurzeme and along the tributaries of the Lielupe River. With the weather expected to remain relatively dry and temperatures dipping below zero at night, the flooding risk may be diminishing, but the situation remains precarious as ice continues to move and evolve in the waterways.

The ongoing weather patterns in the region have led to concerns regarding flooding and ice blockages, which may affect local ecosystems and potentially impact human activities near the rivers. Observations noted by the LETA agency have highlighted that while the majority of rivers see continued levels of fluctuations, the projected weather conditions suggest a gradual thawing of the remaining snow, which could stabilize the flow and improve the situation, but residents in affected areas should remain vigilant for any abrupt changes.
