Heavy rains: over 150 cities in PB are under Inmet alert
The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) has issued renewed alerts for heavy rains affecting cities in Paraíba, Brazil, valid until Friday morning.
The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) in Brazil has updated its weather alerts, notifying the public about impending heavy rain across numerous cities in Paraíba. This announcement, made on Wednesday, signals the renewal of two weather alerts—yellow and orange—extended until 10 AM on Friday, emphasizing the seriousness of the weather conditions that residents can expect. In total, a staggering 167 cities are categorized under the yellow alert for intense rainfall, while an additional 67 cities are facing the higher-risk orange alert.
The criteria for these alerts are distinctive; the orange alert indicates a situation of high danger where rainfall can reach between 30 to 60 mm per hour or 50 to 100 mm per day, accompanied by strong winds ranging from 60 to 100 km/h. The implications of such weather patterns involve potential power outages, downed tree branches, localized flooding, and risks associated with electrical discharges. These conditions urge residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions in anticipation of possible weather disruptions.
Conversely, the yellow alert denotes potential danger from heavy rain, which may bring rainfall rates between 20 to 30 mm per hour or up to 50 mm a day, with winds peaking at 40 to 60 km/h. While considered a lower risk compared to the orange alert, the areas under yellow warning still face the possibility of power supply issues and other associated dangers. The renewed alerts by Inmet reflect a proactive approach in ensuring public safety during severe weather conditions in Paraíba, urging communities to prepare for the adverse impacts that the heavy rains could bring.
