Riga's Municipal Police had a busy year in 2022, responding to more than 130,000 calls. Notably, about 50.4% of these calls were related to violations of road traffic rules, highlighting a significant focus on traffic enforcement. The municipality has expanded the police's powers in recent years, allowing them to control and penalize speeding and other driving infractions, which has increased the workload for officers tasked with ensuring road safety.

To enhance their enforcement capabilities, the Municipal Police have deployed unmarked vehicles equipped with speed control devices, resulting in the documentation of 93,880 speeding violations in 2022 alone. This strategy reflects a concerted effort by city authorities to enforce traffic laws more effectively and reduce reckless driving behaviors on the streets of Riga. According to Andrejs Aronovs, Deputy Chief of Riga Municipal Police, while officers are expected to respond to violations actively, their approach prioritizes public safety and assistance rather than solely punitive measures.

Citizens have increasingly turned to the police for help regarding various issues, indicating a growing trust in the Municipal Police's ability to address public safety concerns. As these initiatives progress, it remains to be seen how the evolving responsibilities of the police will impact their relationship with the community and how effectively they can manage the balance between enforcement and public service.
