Crete: New Rescue Operation for Migrants

A rescue operation is underway for migrants found on a boat in the sea area south of Crete.

A rescue operation is currently taking place for migrants located aboard a vessel in the waters south of Crete. According to the Greek Coast Guard, the migrants were identified and rescued by a passing ship approximately 45 nautical miles south of Kaloi Limenes, after which they were transferred to a coast guard vessel. The incident occurred earlier this afternoon, and nearly 38 individuals are now being transported back to Kaloi Limenes, from where they will proceed to a temporary accommodation facility in Heraklion, as per reports from the Athens-Macedonian News Agency.

In a related development, a total of 86 migrants have been reported at Kaloi Limenes in two separate incidents involving boats. The first incident involved a merchant vessel that spotted and rescued 43 individuals found on a boat approximately 46.5 nautical miles southeast of Kaloi Limenes, demonstrating the ongoing challenges and dangers faced by migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean in search of safety and better opportunities.

These recent operations highlight the significant ongoing migration crisis in the region, underscoring the need for coordinated rescue efforts and comprehensive policies to address the underlying causes of migration. As the number of migrants continues to rise, the situation remains critical, prompting urgent discussions among authorities regarding humanitarian responses and the safety of maritime routes in the Mediterranean Sea.
