Crete: Search continues for migrants in the sea area south of Kalo Limani

Search and rescue operations are ongoing in Crete after a tragic incident where several migrants are missing, with some casualties reported and others rescued.

In the sea area south of Kalo Limani, located in the municipality of Faistos in Crete, search efforts are continuing to locate several missing individuals following a distressing maritime incident early this morning. The situation has become urgent as the authorities aim to find those unaccounted for amidst the grim backdrop of the incident that unfolded at dawn.

Twenty people, primarily of Sudanese and Egyptian nationality and including four minors, were successfully rescued and have since been placed in temporary accommodation in Heraklion. However, the discovery of three deceased men adds to the tragedy of the situation, raising concerns and underscoring the risks involved in migration across dangerous maritime routes in the region.

Search operations are set to persist throughout the night, supported not just by passing vessels but also by a frigate from the Hellenic Navy alongside a vessel from the FRONTEX agency. The collaborative efforts among various maritime authorities reflect the urgency of the situation, as they strive to ensure no more lives are lost at sea and to maintain the safety of those seeking refuge from instability in their home countries.
