Crete – Gavdos: New rescue operations for migrants
New migrant rescue missions were conducted off the coasts of Crete and Gavdos, involving operations led by the Greek Coast Guard.
In the last few hours, two additional incidents involving boats carrying migrants were reported off the southern areas of Crete and Gavdos. A boat carrying 47 individuals was spotted 47 miles south of Gavdos by a cargo ship registered in Hong Kong. Coordinated by the Operations Center of the Hellenic Coast Guard, the migrants were subsequently transferred by a coast guard vessel to the port of Karave in Gavdos. A few hours later, another boat with 26 people aboard was detected by a Liberian-flagged cargo ship, 25 nautical miles south of the port of Kalo Chorio near Heraklion.
The rescue operation for this second group was also coordinated by the Coast Guard's Operations Center, with assistance from a Frontex drone. The 26 migrants were later transported to Kalo Chorio. This series of rescue missions highlights the ongoing challenges faced by migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean, as well as the continuous efforts by Greek authorities and international agencies to manage the situation. It also underscores the severity of the humanitarian crisis in the region, where the sea often serves as a dangerous route for people fleeing turmoil in their home countries.
Earlier on Wednesday, it is noted that over 100 migrants were rescued in three separate incidents south of Crete, reflecting an ongoing need for vigilance and response to maritime distress calls as migration continues to be a pressing issue in the Mediterranean Sea.
