Eurostat: Unemployment in Lithuania reached 6.4% in January, exceeding the EU average

Lithuania's unemployment rate in January stood at 6.4%, higher than the EU average, with notable increases in youth unemployment.

According to Eurostat, Lithuania's unemployment rate was recorded at 6.4% in January, surpassing the average unemployment rate across the European Union. This figure translates to approximately 101,000 individuals without jobs, including a significant demographic of 15,000 people aged under 25. While the broader EU and eurozone saw slight decreases in unemployment over the month and year, Lithuania's statistics point towards a worrying trend, particularly among the youth population.

In December, Lithuania saw an increase in jobless individuals, with an upward trend noted in January as well. Compared to the previous month, 3,000 more persons were reported to be unemployed, and there are 6,000 more unemployed than this time last year. The unemployment rate for youths under the age of 25 rose by 0.6 percentage points year-on-year to reach 15.2%. This spike in youth unemployment draws attention to potential economic challenges faced by this age group as they navigate the job market in a recovering economy.

Eurostat reported that across the EU as of January, there were 12.93 million unemployed individuals, with 10.77 million situated within the eurozone. The annual decrease in the unemployment figures for the EU was noted at 274,000, while the eurozone experienced a drop of 273,000 individuals. The persistent higher unemployment rate in Lithuania could indicate specific regional economic difficulties that the country needs to address, especially in terms of providing support and opportunities for its younger workforce.
