Employment Service: A More Active Start to the Year in the Job Market

Lithuania's Employment Service reports an increase in registered unemployed individuals and a significant rise in job vacancies at the start of the year.

On February 1, the Lithuanian Employment Service recorded 164,200 unemployed individuals, a 3.1% increase from the previous month but a 2.4% decrease from the same time last year. Despite a rise in the labor force supply, the demand for workers surged by one and a half times, reaching 12,400, indicating that employers have posted 4,800 more job openings than before. This reflects a seasonal trend where employers are actively forming teams and hiring at the beginning of the year.

Jurgita Zemblytė, head of the Monitoring and Analysis Department of the Employment Service, highlighted the traditional market recovery at the year's start, where job offers increased by 64% in January compared to the previous year’s 49%. Furthermore, employment rates saw a 25% increase, which is in line with last year's data reflecting a similar uptick of 26%. This trend indicates a positive shift in the job market as both job seekers and employers show increased activity.

Job searching has intensified across virtually all municipalities and sectors, with the production sector leading the way in recruitment, posting 2,800 vacancies, followed by administrative and support services with 2,000 and transportation and storage companies with 1,800 vacancies. This broad-based increase in recruitment signals a tightening labor market and underscores the growing confidence among employees to return to work, further energizing the job market in Lithuania.
