PSOL rejects federation with PT in defeat for Boulos' group
The PSOL party rejected a proposed federation with the PT for the 2026 elections, which was seen as a significant setback for minister Guilherme Boulos.
The PSOL (Socialism and Liberty Party) has decided against forming a federation with the PT (Workers' Party) in the lead-up to the 2026 elections, as revealed during a virtual national board meeting on Saturday. The proposal received 47 votes in favor and 15 against, indicating a firm consensus against this strategic alignment. If approved, the federation would have effectively merged the two parties, creating a unified identity while allowing them to maintain their separate names and numbers. This rejection was particularly noted as a defeat for Guilherme Boulos, who holds the position of Secretary-General within the party.
This decision may lead to a potential split within the PSOL, especially concerning the faction led by Boulos, known as the Revolução Solidária (Solidarity Revolution). This group includes several prominent figures within the party, and their dissatisfaction with the rejection hints at possible unrest and calls for reform within the party's strategies for upcoming elections. This rift among the ranks of the PSOL could have consequences for its organizational integrity and future electoral success.
In addition to rejecting the federation, the PSOL has expressed its support for President Lula's bid for a fourth term in office, indicating a willingness to collaborate with the PT on certain political fronts despite their refusal to unify as a single party entity. This endorsement signifies an interesting dynamic where the PSOL may not field its own candidate for the presidency but rather consolidate efforts towards maintaining a progressive agenda in alignment with the PT's leadership, which may serve them well in the upcoming electoral landscape.
