Capybara injured by metal cable in illegal hunting attempt is rescued after trap set up in Itapetininga
A capybara injured by a metal cable during an illegal hunting attempt in Itapetininga, Brazil, has been rescued after a containment structure was installed by local authorities.
In Itapetininga, São Paulo, a capybara was rescued after being injured by a metal cable intended for illegal hunting. This incident occurred in August 2025, and the animal, along with another capybara yet to be located, suffered severe injuries. The local government took action by setting up a containment structure, known as a brete, at a strategic spot along the Marginal dos Cavalos, an area frequented by capybaras, to facilitate the safe capture and rescue of these animals.
After the successful rescue on a Monday night, the injured capybara was taken for veterinary treatment and will remain under observation for up to five days. The municipality's animal defense subsecretary, Riad Elneser Londoño, emphasized the importance of keeping the capybara in environments similar to their natural habitat for their well-being, as prolonged exposure to foreign surroundings can be stressful for wild animals. This incident raises awareness about the ongoing illegal hunting practices that endanger local wildlife.
The community response and the proactive measures taken by local authorities highlight a growing concern for wildlife welfare in the region. As such incidents continue to emerge, there is a pressing need for more robust wildlife protection laws to deter illegal hunting and ensure the safety of these animals. Moreover, collaborative efforts between the local government and wildlife organizations could foster a more sustainable approach to wildlife conservation in Itapetininga and beyond.
