A capybara was rescued near the Pinheiros River in São Paulo after being found with plastic tape tightly wrapped around its body, posing a serious risk to its health.

On Thursday, a capybara in São Paulo was rescued after being discovered with plastic tape wrapped around its body, which was constricting its thorax and jeopardizing its life. The animal was located near the Santo Amaro station by employees of ViaMobilidade, the company operating the Line 9-Esmeralda. Observations over several days led the team to contact volunteers from the CAPA Project, which manages the care of around 120 capybaras living along the 25 kilometers of the Pinheiros River.

To ensure a safe rescue, the volunteers set up a specialized trap equipped with an open door and sugarcane bait to attract the capybara while minimizing stress on the animal. The rescue team successfully handled the situation, removing the tape that was constricting the capybara's chest. After assessment, the team returned the animal to its habitat, ensuring it could continue to live in its natural environment without the threat posed by the plastic.

The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by wildlife in urban areas, such as entanglement in human-made materials. Efforts by local organizations like the CAPA Project emphasize the importance of volunteer work in animal rescue and the need for increased awareness about the impact of litter on wildlife. This rescue serves as a reminder of the intertwined lives of humans and nature, urging for better coexistence with local fauna.
