Swedish Ferry Collides in Harbor

A Swedish ferry, M/S Eckerö, collided with another vessel and a dock in Grisslehamn, Sweden, resulting in significant damage but no injuries.

On Wednesday morning, the M/S Eckerö, a ferry operating between Finland and Sweden, collided in the harbor of Grisslehamn, Sweden. According to the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, the accident occurred when a vessel from the Swedish Coast Guard first hit the M/S Eckerö before crashing into the harbor dock. Eyewitnesses reported that the Coast Guard vessel was traveling at full speed and created a large hole in its hull upon impact. There were also minor damages reported on the side of the M/S Eckerö, leading to the cancellation of all its departures for that day.

Mattias Lindholm, communications director for the Coast Guard, confirmed the collision to Aftonbladet, stating that an investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances of the incident. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and there were no oil spills in the area, which can often complicate maritime accidents. The M/S Eckerö ferry provides service between Eckerö in the Åland Islands and Grisslehamn in Sweden, operated by the Åland-based company Eckerö Linjen, a part of the Eckerö Group.

This is not the first incident involving the M/S Eckerö; it was in the news previously in October 2023 when its car deck collapsed during loading. Such repeated issues could raise concerns about the safety and operational oversight of ferry services in the region, as they are crucial for transport links between Finland and Sweden, particularly for trade and tourism.
