Coast Guard Collides with Eckerö Line Ferry

The Swedish Coast Guard collided with an Eckerö Line ferry in Grisslehamn, causing damage but no reported injuries.

A collision occurred between a vessel of the Swedish Coast Guard and an Eckerö Line ferry in Grisslehamn, near Norrtälje, just before a scheduled departure at 10 AM. Eyewitness Tom Mattsson reported that the Coast Guard ship crashed at full speed into the dock, resulting in significant damage to the hull of the Coast Guard vessel. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, and there was no oil spill from the incident.

The press officer of the Coast Guard, Mattias Lindholm, confirmed the collision, stating there was a need for an investigation to understand the circumstances surrounding the event. The Eckerö Line ferry also sustained minor damage above the waterline. As a consequence of the incident, departures scheduled for 10 AM and 1:30 PM were canceled, affecting travel plans for passengers.

This incident raises concerns about maritime safety and operational protocols of the Coast Guard, particularly in busy ports where ferry operations are prevalent. Further investigation will likely scrutinize the navigational decisions made leading up to the collision and whether any preventive measures could have been implemented to avoid such incidents in the future.
