Municipality: The educational process at Adolfo Ramanauskas-Vanagas Gymnasium will be renewed on Thursday
The educational process at Adolfo Ramanauskas-Vanagas Gymnasium is set to resume with a hybrid model after a disruption caused by the firing of a teacher, leading to protests and remote learning.
The Adolfo Ramanauskas-Vanagas Gymnasium in Alytus, Lithuania, is preparing to renew its educational process following a period of remote learning. According to the statements made during a meeting of the Seimas Education and Science Committee, the school will implement a hybrid teaching model next week after a successful recruitment of teachers who were willing to return to work despite previous pressures from unions. Initially, on Thursday, the teaching will still be conducted remotely, but by Monday, students are expected to return to in-person classes.
The decision to renew the teaching process comes after a significant controversy surrounding the school’s administration, particularly the firing of ethics teacher M. Platūkienė, which was met with strong condemnation from the Alytus education community. The circumstances leading to her dismissal were related to alleged violence against students, prompting protests from teachers refusing to conduct classes until the situation was addressed. The community’s collective actions indicate a deep concern for educational integrity and the welfare of students.
In light of this situation, Lithuania's Minister of Education, Science and Sport, R. Popovienė, has urged the municipality to establish an impartial commission to investigate the issues surrounding the gymnasium. This request reflects the ongoing struggle between educational authorities and the staff regarding school governance, teacher rights, and student safety, highlighting the complexities and challenges currently faced by the Lithuanian education system, especially in the context of ethical concerns and administrative decisions.
