Conflict over dismissal: Teachers of Alytus A. Ramanauskas-Vanagas Gymnasium halt the educational process
Teachers at Alytus A. Ramanauskas-Vanagas Gymnasium have suspended classes in protest against the dismissal of an ethics teacher.
On February 23, at Alytus A. Ramanauskas-Vanagas Gymnasium, ethics teacher Meilė Platūkienė was dismissed, a decision that has been met with strong condemnation from the local educational community. In response to this situation, teachers from various schools in Alytus gathered at the gymnasium to present signed petitions demanding the reversal of the dismissal decision, highlighting the collective support for Platūkienė among educators.
Throughout the morning, students, parents, and teachers convened at the gymnasium, expressing solidarity with Platūkienė and urging the interim gymnasium director, Aleksandras Kirilovas, to respond to their concerns. As the situation remained unresolved, the community decided to escalate their efforts by contacting the Alytus city municipality in hopes of garnering support and initiating a constructive dialogue regarding the dismissal.
On February 24, protesters composed of teachers, parents, and students gathered outside the Alytus city municipality, aiming to engage in discussions with the city’s mayor, Nerijus Cesiulis, to seek a resolution to the escalating conflict. However, the mayor informed them that he lacked the authority to address their specific issue, leaving the participants feeling frustrated and unheard in their attempt to restore their teacher’s position and protect their educational environment.
