VUGD received three calls about burning soot in chimneys

Latvian fire services responded to three incidents involving burning soot in residential chimneys, highlighting the importance of regular chimney maintenance.

On a recent Tuesday evening, the State Fire and Rescue Service of Latvia (VUGD) received three emergency calls regarding incidents of burning soot in residential chimneys. One of the significant calls came from the municipality of Limbaži, specifically the village of Umurga, where firefighters arrived to find burning soot in the chimney of a two-story residential building. Before the firefighters could arrive, one individual had evacuated from the building, underscoring the potential danger these situations pose to residential occupants.

The VUGD has emphasized the critical nature of regular chimney cleaning to prevent soot buildup, which can ignite and create dangerously high temperatures within the chimney structure. Such conditions can weaken the chimney over time, leading to a risk of fire spreading to other parts of the house when sparks escape through cracks and openings, potentially igniting roofing materials, ceilings, or belongings in attics. This communication stresses the importance of preventative measures to avoid severe fire hazards associated with chimney use.

In the past 24 hours, the VUGD reported a total of 32 emergency calls, including 16 related to rescue operations, while 13 calls were identified as false alarms. This highlights the heavy workload for the fire services and the recurring issue of chimney fires that could be mitigated through adequate maintenance and public awareness campaigns about home safety practices.
