Escaped from a burning apartment last night

Two residents managed to escape a burning apartment in Grafarholt without injury, while others were allowed to return home after firefighting efforts concluded.

A significant fire erupted in a ground-floor apartment of a multi-family building in Grafarholt around 4 AM on the night of March 4, 2026. Thankfully, two occupants were able to exit the apartment on their own, suffering no injuries. The local fire chief, Davíð Friðjónsson, reported that all available personnel were dispatched to contain the fire, which was successfully extinguished within an hour.

During the firefighting operations, the entire building was evacuated as a precaution. After the fire was brought under control, residents of the other apartments in the building were permitted to return to their homes. However, the apartment where the fire originated suffered extensive damage. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and local police have taken over the case for further inquiry.

This incident underscores the importance of fire safety awareness in residential buildings. While no injuries occurred, the significant property damage serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of fires in multi-family dwellings. Community members are advised to ensure their smoke detection systems are functional and to review their escape plans in the event of an emergency.
