Edgar Valter, a prominent Estonian children's author and illustrator, passed away in 2006.
Edgar Valter, born in Tallinn as the fourth child in an eight-sibling family, was a prolific artist who contributed significantly to Estonian children's literature. After finishing a non-comprehensive secondary school in 1945, Valter worked in various jobs including as an apprentice locksmith and a sailor before becoming a freelance artist in 1950. As a freelance artist, he illustrated around 250 books, primarily children's literature, and produced caricatures published in several magazines and newspapers. Valter's first caricature was published in "Õhtuleht" in 1944, and he was a consistent contributor to the magazine "Pikker" starting in 1957. His artistic work extended to other magazines like Hea Laps, Täheke, and Pioneer. In 1994, Valter published "Pokuraamat," his first children's book written and illustrated solely by him, which received accolades from children in the Nukitsa competition in 1996. This achievement marked the beginning of his celebrated contributions to children's literature in Estonia, followed by works like "Pokuaabits" and "Pokulood," further cementing his legacy in the field.
