Alibaba plans $1.5m grants for African startups

Alibaba Philanthropy and the Jack Ma Foundation are launching a $1.5 million grant program to support African entrepreneurs through the 2026 edition of Africa's Business Heroes.

Alibaba Philanthropy, in partnership with the Jack Ma Foundation, is proud to announce the launch of a $1.5 million grant initiative aimed at supporting African entrepreneurs as part of the 2026 edition of Africa’s Business Heroes (ABH). This series, which is now in its eighth iteration, focuses on the theme 'Defining Africa’s Future Today,' and targets startups across various sectors including climate-smart agriculture, digital finance, healthcare, logistics, and emerging technologies. The grants aim to encourage the development of innovative solutions to tackle some of the continent's most pressing challenges.

Zahra Boateng-Baitie, the Managing Director for Africa, emphasized the essential role of entrepreneurs in shaping the continent's future by addressing significant issues and tapping into economic potential. In addition to the $1.5 million in grants, the ABH program will provide selected founders with mentorship and strategic support critical for scaling their businesses sustainably. This initiative intends to create jobs and foster inclusive growth, thereby driving economic transformation within African communities.
