Brazilian-style beers form historic podium at competition in Blumenau
The Brazilian Beer Contest in Blumenau showcased 2,700 samples, with local brews taking the top honors.
The traditional Brazilian Beer Contest, held in Blumenau, Santa Catarina, featured approximately 2,700 samples from 175 styles, highlighting the rich diversity of Brazilian brewing. This year's event was notable for the Best of Show category, where the top award was claimed by Patanegra Cacacu Wood from Pinhais, Paraná, a unique sour beer aged with Brazilian wood, marking a distinct departure from the usual European styles traditionally celebrated at such competitions.
Following Patanegra's victory, the second prize was awarded to Faroeste Beer’s Pina Colada, a catharina sour flavored with pineapple and coconut, hailing from Itajaí, Santa Catarina. The catharina sour, a style recognized by the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) as a Brazilian innovation, has been gaining popularity and acclaim, reflecting the country's evolving craft beer scene. The creativity of Brazilian brewers was further showcased with the third place going to Alagoas Funky Wild from Caatinga Rocks in Murici, Alagoas, a new style known as manipueira selvagem, which is fermented from cassava and is aiming for international certification.
This competition not only underscores Brazil's burgeoning craft beer industry but also the country's ability to carve out its own identity within the global beer community. The success of these local brews may encourage further innovation among Brazilian brewers and increase recognition on the international stage, as they strive to showcase their unique flavors and brewing techniques that tap into Brazil's rich natural resources.
