EU aids citizens stranded in the Middle East โ no help for Finns
The EU will assist member states like Italy, Austria, and Slovakia in evacuating their citizens from the Middle East, but Finland has not requested such assistance.
The European Union has initiated support for its member states to help their citizens return home from crisis-hit areas in the Middle East. According to AFP, Italy, Austria, and Slovakia were among the first countries to seek assistance for evacuation flights as tensions escalated following the U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran. EU Crisis Management Commissioner Hadja Lahbib indicated that more countries are expected to request assistance in the coming days due to the ongoing unrest and the precarious situation faced by their nationals in the region.
Finnish officials, however, have stated that the country is not currently in need of EU evacuation aid. Jussi Tanner, head of the consular department at the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, informed Helsingin Sanomat that Finland is monitoring the situation but is not yet in a position to request assistance. This decision reflects an assessment of the safety and readiness of Finnish citizens abroad, as they remain in the region without any immediate plans for evacuation.
Should the situation deteriorate, however, Finnish citizens may still have the option to utilize evacuation arranged by other EU member states. This highlights the interconnectedness of EU nations in crisis management, although Finlandโs current stance emphasizes a cautious approach, prioritizing the assessment of the unfolding situation before seeking external help.
