“Let’s make sure no one is alone” – Helin Farman remembers the deceased in the Vantaa fire during a memorial service

A memorial service was held in Vantaa for the victims of a fire that killed five members of a Somali family.

On Tuesday evening, a memorial service was organized by the Vantaa Hämeenkylä parish to honor the victims of a tragic apartment fire that occurred earlier that day in Vantaa, Finland, claiming the lives of five individuals from a Somali background. This tragic incident took place in a residential building in the Pähkinärinne district, and the community gathered to mourn and support one another during this difficult time.

Although attendance was limited, with only about a dozen participants showing up for the evening service, the atmosphere was solemn and filled with respect for the lost lives. The service included readings of psalms, prayers, and music, and attendees were invited to light candles in front of the church altar as a tribute to the victims. This communal act of remembrance served to provide a moment of reflection and connection for those affected by the loss, emphasizing the spirit of solidarity within the community.

One of the attendees, Helin Farman from Espoo, expressed her deep sense of duty to support her friends of Somali background and the broader community, highlighting the importance of standing together during such trying times. She mentioned her personal connection to the victims' community, stating that it is a moral responsibility to show support. The Vantaa parish also streamed the service online to allow those who could not attend in person to join in the remembrance, reflecting the community's collective grief and the desire to ensure that no one feels isolated in their sorrow.
