75-year-old farmer approved for the 2nd time at UFPI returned to study after retirement: 'an inspiration for grandchildren', says daughter-in-law
A 75-year-old man named João José de Carvalho has been accepted for a second time into a biological sciences program at the Federal University of Piauí after returning to education post-retirement.
João José de Carvalho, affectionately known as 'Janjão', has made headlines after being accepted for the second time into the biological sciences program at the Federal University of Piauí (UFPI). At 75 years old, this inspiring elder returned to education after retiring from his career as a farmer. He previously completed his high school education through adult education programs, demonstrating his commitment to lifelong learning.
Motivated by a long-held dream of pursuing higher education, Janjão received encouragement from his daughter-in-law, Maria José Silva Alves, a professor in their hometown. He began his educational journey at the Centro Estadual de Tempo Integral (Ceti) Reunida in Patos in 2024, shortly before he prepared for the National High School Exam (Enem), which he successfully passed. His achievements in education not only fulfill his own aspirations but also stand as a shining example for his grandchildren.
Despite some challenges that prevented him from starting his degree in 2025, Janjão's persistence led to his acceptance again in 2026 through the Unified Selection System (Sisu). His story resonates with many in Brazil who aspire to prioritize education at any stage of life, highlighting the importance of support from family and community in achieving personal dreams.
