Latvia will provide temporary accommodation for Ukrainian civilians for up to 60 days; reduces food compensation

Latvia is limiting the temporary accommodation for Ukrainian civilians to a maximum of 60 days and reducing food compensation rates for these individuals.

The Latvian Ministry of Economy has announced changes to the Cabinet regulations concerning the support provided to Ukrainian civilians, stating that the previous accommodation periods of either 60 or 120 days will now be consolidated into a single base period of up to 60 days. This means that Ukrainian civilians seeking refuge in Latvia will have a shorter guaranteed accommodation period, potentially affecting their stability as they seek longer-term solutions in the country.

In addition to the accommodation changes, the government is also reducing the level of state-subsidized food assistance for these civilians. Starting April 1, 2026, municipalities will be required to provide a uniform compensation of up to 5 euros per day per person, a decrease from the previous coverage of up to 10 euros per day for food expenses. This change raises concerns about how much support will be available for Ukrainian refugees seeking basic sustenance during their stay in Latvia.

However, the government has clarified that the higher rate of 10 euros per day will still be maintained for individuals who require state-funded medical transportation from Ukrainian medical facilities to hospitals in Latvia. This indicates that while some reductions in assistance are being made, the government recognizes the need for adequate support for vulnerable individuals in critical health situations. Overall, these policy adjustments reflect the Latvian government's ongoing efforts to manage resources effectively while addressing the influx of Ukrainian civilians due to the conflict in their home country and the evolving needs of this population in Latvia.
