Avian influenza advances in the country: a case detected in a laying hens farm in Córdoba
A new outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza was detected in a laying hens farm in Córdoba, marking the third case in Argentina.
The National Service of Health and Agro-Food Quality (Senasa) in Argentina has confirmed a new outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5 in a commercial laying hens farm located in Alejo Ledesma, Córdoba. This incident is significant as it marks the third confirmed case of HPAI in the country, highlighting a worrying trend of the virus's spread across commercial farms. Previously reported outbreaks in Ranchos and Lobos in Buenos Aires have led to similar containment responses by the authorities.
In response to the outbreak in Córdoba, Senasa has immediately activated its Contingency Plan, which includes the quarantining of the affected facility and the establishment of a 10 km Health Control Zone (ZCS) surrounding the outbreak site. Within this zone, strict containment measures will be implemented to enhance biosecurity, restrict movement of animals, and conduct thorough epidemiological monitoring and reporting. These actions are crucial to preventing further spread of the virus, which poses a major risk to the poultry industry and public health.
Additionally, national health agents will oversee the depopulation of the affected farm and the proper disposal of all infected birds to ensure that the virus does not spread further. This proactive approach demonstrates the government's commitment to managing the outbreak and protecting both poultry farmers and consumers across Argentina from the ramifications of avian influenza, which can have dire economic and health impacts if left unchecked.
