Abandoned baby by the roadside was covered in blood, says police

A newborn baby, found abandoned by a highway in Brazil, was discovered covered in blood and still attached to the umbilical cord.

In a shocking incident in Brazil, a newborn baby was discovered abandoned on the side of the GO-403 highway, approximately 5 kilometers from Caldazinha in the Goiânia metropolitan area. The baby, who was only about three days old, was found covered in blood and still attached to the umbilical cord. Police reported that the infant was placed inside a black plastic bag, which, although open, could not prevent ants from crawling over the baby’s body, particularly around the umbilical area where birth fluids were still present.

The discovery was made on a Sunday evening around 5:30 PM by a passing motorist who alerted authorities. The child was wearing a diaper and outfit and was reportedly seen 'sucking' on his own arm, a sign of distress or instinctual behavior for nourishment. Following the emergency call, the baby was promptly taken to Maternidade Aristina Cândida in Senador Canedo, where he received medical attention. The shocking nature of the finding has raised alarms in the local community regarding infant abandonment and child welfare.

The local police are investigating the case, and there may be future efforts to increase awareness about the dangers of newborn abandonment. Such incidents highlight the critical need for support systems for new mothers in crisis, emphasizing that there are safe places to leave babies rather than risking their lives. This incident also brings attention to broader issues of societal support for troubled families and the high stakes involved in child welfare in Brazil.
