Organizers Confirm: Haanja Marathon Will Take Place

The organizers of the Haanja Marathon remain optimistic that the event will proceed despite the warm weather conditions affecting the ski trails.

The 48th Haanja Marathon is set to take place, with organizers confirming their commitment to the event despite the challenges posed by an exceptionally warm winter. The rising temperatures have necessitated repairs on the ski trails, but the overall snow condition remains adequate, according to marathon trail master Timo Palo. While there are some sections of the track where the snow cover is thin, these areas are manageable with maintenance work.

Looking ahead, Palo mentioned that even though the weather forecast does not suggest a return to colder conditions soon, he remains hopeful. Starting Thursday, a shift in wind patterns towards the north and the influence of high pressure may lead to colder nighttime temperatures, which could help stabilize the snow conditions during the day and slow down the melting process. The preparatory works for track repairs will commence alongside this hoped-for weather change.

The Haanja Marathon is a significant event for the local community and cross-country skiing enthusiasts, with its reputation drawing participants from various regions. The commitment by the organizers to ensure the marathon occurs reflects their dedication to the sport and their community, despite environmental challenges. Successfully holding this event amid fluctuating weather demonstrates resilience and adaptability within the sport.
