CONFIRMED: The Tartu Marathon will be held in full length on the original track
The Tartu Marathon 2023 will take place fully on the original route between Otepää and Elva, despite recent concerns over snow levels.
The organizing team of the Tartu Marathon has confirmed that the 52nd Tartu Marathon will be held this Sunday on the original track located between Otepää and Elva. The condition of the marathon track had recently raised concerns due to inadequate snowfall, which limited the usual maintenance activities. Notably, the section between Palu and Elva had the thinnest snow cover, prompting the organizers to personally inspect the route over the weekend. Fortunately, recent snowfall has improved conditions, and forecasts indicate more snow arriving by the end of the marathon week.
This year, the track has remained skiable throughout January up to the present moment, with a classic track established on both sides and a compressed snow layer thickness varying from 2 to 4 centimeters. The organizers have ensured that all marathon distances can be facilitated on the original track. The chief organizer, Indrek Kelk, expressed confidence in the state of the tracks for the event, underscoring the careful monitoring and management of snow conditions leading up to the marathon.
As the marathon approaches, participants and enthusiasts alike have been closely watching the status of the tracks, especially considering the unpredictable weather patterns of winter. The condition of the course is crucial not only for the athletes competing but also for maintaining the integrity and tradition of the Tartu Marathon, a significant event in Estonia's sports calendar. With the current conditions favoring a successful event, expectations are high for a smooth run this weekend, promising robust participation as skiers gear up for one of the hallmark events of local winter sports.
