The Late Spring Moon Ik-hwan Memorial Foundation has initiated its call for nominations for the 28th Late Spring Unification Award, which will take place throughout March. This award was established in 1996 to honor the legacy of Pastor Moon Ik-hwan, who was an advocate for ethnic reconciliation and peace across the divided Korean Peninsula. The award recognizes individuals and organizations that have actively engaged in democracy and peace movements, reflecting the hopes and struggles of the people. Past recipients include notable figures such as former President Kim Dae-jung and various organizations committed to promoting peace and unification in Korea.
The nomination period runs from March 3 to March 31, with the selection panel set to announce the first round of chosen candidates in April and the final selections by April 30. Applicants can submit their nominations through a Google Form, allowing for both self-nominations and nominations of others. Winners of the Late Spring Unification Award will receive a cash prize of 3 million won along with a plaque, while those receiving a special award will earn 2 million won and a plaque as well. The awards ceremony is scheduled for May 30 at the Unification House dedicated to Pastor Moon Ik-hwan, located in Gangbuk-gu, Seoul.
This annual event not only commemorates Pastor Moon's contributions to Korean society but also serves to inspire ongoing efforts towards reconciliation and unity amid the complexities surrounding inter-Korean relations. It highlights the significance of grassroots movements in advocating for peace and democracy, as well as recognizing the continued struggles faced by the people in their search for a unified Korean Peninsula.
