Government and ruling party discuss relocating 21,000 South Koreans from 13 Middle Eastern countries due to regional war

The South Korean government is assessing the situation to potentially relocate 21,000 citizens in the Middle East to neighboring countries or back to South Korea amid escalating conflict in the region.

The South Korean government, in light of the recent conflict triggered by the U.S. and Israel's invasion of Iran, has reported the need to assess the safety and potential relocation of approximately 21,000 South Koreans currently in 13 Middle Eastern countries. This number includes both long-term residents and temporary travelers who may need to be evacuated as the situation deteriorates. Lawmaker Kim Young-bae highlighted the ongoing evaluation at a government meeting regarding the Iranian crisis, pointing out the importance of identifying transport routes that are still accessible for those needing emergency dispatch back to South Korea.

Kim noted that within the conflict zones, there are still South Koreans residing in Iran and Israel, with 59 individuals reported in Iran despite the risks and 616 in Israel. Additionally, around 4,000 South Koreans are staying in the United Arab Emirates and Dubai, primarily consisting of travelers. The government is currently exploring means of transport through countries that have not closed their airspace as they work to ensure the safe return of their citizens amidst the escalating tensions.

Aside from citizen safety, the South Korean government is also focused on securing domestic oil and gas supplies, especially following Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. With approximately 30 vessels involved in the oil transportation sector reported in the vicinity of the strait, the government is developing contingency plans that include discussing strategic oil and gas procurement methods. Lawmaker Kim stressed the need for comprehensive strategy talks, suggesting potential joint committee meetings to coordinate safety measures and response efforts efficiently, all under the leadership of the Prime Minister and relevant government officials.
