KT Reveals 6G Vision at MWC: 'AI for Networks, and Networks for AI'

KT has unveiled its vision for 6G communications at MWC 2023, emphasizing a framework that integrates artificial intelligence to optimize network performance.

KT has introduced its vision for sixth-generation (6G) communication at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) held in Barcelona, Spain. The company positions 6G not merely as an extension of speed competition but as a vital infrastructure technology that enables artificial intelligence (AI) to function reliably. Their core vision hinges on two pillars: 'AI for networks' and 'networks for AI,' indicating a system where AI autonomously manages networks while ensuring ultra-low latency and high reliability for users accessing AI services.

In detailing its approach to 6G, KT has outlined several key technology directions including ultra-connectivity, ultra-low latency, quantum-safe communications, AI-native functionalities, autonomous networks, and meaning-centric transmission. The company aims to establish a comprehensive coverage strategy that encompasses terrestrial, marine, and aerial networks to facilitate these capabilities. Specifically, KT plans to implement network slicing and photonic network technologies to enhance service quality across both wired and wireless communication channels.

KT is uniquely positioned as the only domestic telecom company to commercialize 5G standalone mode, crucial for the advancement of 6G communication. While many users currently rely on non-standalone modes that combine 5G and LTE, the company recognizes the widespread adoption of 5G standalone mode as a significant hurdle in transitioning to 6G. KT’s Director of Network Research, Lee Jong-sik, stated the company is focusing on revolutionizing customer experience and fostering sustainable growth through innovative cost structures and the creation of new market opportunities.
