More than 500 Latvians 'stuck' in the Middle East due to war
Over 500 Latvians are stranded in the Middle East, mainly in the United Arab Emirates, as flights have been canceled due to escalating conflict in the region.
More than 500 Latvians currently find themselves stranded in the Middle East, with the majority located in the United Arab Emirates. The national airline airBaltic has extended its suspension of flights to and from Dubai until March 5, which includes the cancellation of a morning flight to Riga scheduled for March 6. In addition, all flights to and from Tel Aviv in Israel have been canceled until the following Monday, further complicating the situation for travelers in the area.
One traveler, Ina EglΔ«te, recounted her experience of arriving in Dubai on February 28 for a short trip that quickly turned alarming. Shortly after checking into their hotel, news broke of an attack and the closure of airspace in the region. With rockets and drones reported in the skies, the initial excitement of their trip dissipated as safety concerns took precedence over leisure activities like visiting the beach.
As the situation unfolds, many Latvians find themselves uncertain about when they will be able to return home. The ongoing conflict raises serious implications for international travel and safety in the region, prompting the Latvian consulate to address the needs and concerns of those still caught in this precarious situation.
