Map: How many competitors will your child have for admission to eight-year grammar schools and how many places are available

Interest in eight-year grammar schools is slowly declining, with this year's applications down slightly from last year's figures.

Interest in eight-year grammar schools in Czechia is showing a gradual decline, with data from Cermat indicating that 19,124 fifth-graders are applying this year compared to 19,415 applicants last year. This change marks a decrease of about 200 spaces in comparison to 2025. While the total capacity of these schools stands at 9,165 places, there remains a significant gap, with roughly 10,000 more students than available spots, pointing to a persistent oversubscription.

For the third year in a row, candidates are allowed to submit up to three applications for different grammar schools. They must choose a priority school and rank the remaining two applications, which the electronic system then uses to determine placements. Across all grammar schools, a total of 41,351 applications have been submitted, though many candidates are counted multiple times due to applying to more than one institution. In the previous year, there were a total of 42,727 applications for these schools.

Deník N has provided a unique interactive map where users can click on specific eight-year grammar schools to view detailed information on the availability of places and the level of competition for each institution. This resource aims to help parents make informed decisions regarding their children's future educational pathways as the competition for places remains intense and the overall landscape continues to evolve.
