RS has 12,000 protective measures active and monitors 900 aggressors with ankle bracelets: 'If necessary, we will expand,' says Leite
The government of Rio Grande do Sul is monitoring over 900 aggressors with electronic ankle bracelets, while around 12,000 protective measures are currently active in the state.
The government of Rio Grande do Sul has reported that it is keeping track of more than 900 aggressors using electronic ankle bracelets, amidst approximately 12,000 active protective measures in the region. Despite these figures, the Brazilian Public Security Yearbook highlighted that in 2024, out of the 52 women killed in Brazil while under emergency protective measures, 14 were in Rio Grande do Sulβmaking up 27% of the total fatalities. This alarming statistic underscores the ongoing challenges related to enforcing and ensuring the effectiveness of protective measures for vulnerable individuals.
In an interview with RBS TV, Governor Eduardo Leite provided insights into the government's strategies to combat violence against women, noting that 20 women had already lost their lives in the state in 2026 alone. He acknowledged the complexity of the situation and emphasized that addressing this issue requires a cultural shift. "We need to change the cultural perception that it is not our business to intervene in domestic disputes," Leite stated, indicating a need for public awareness and involvement in preventing domestic violence.
The government recognizes that raising awareness about the risks associated with domestic violence is a significant challenge, despite having an established support structure that includes immediate assistance programs. Leite's comments suggest that the administration is committed to improving conditions and responses to violence against women, while also suggesting possibly expanding measures if deemed necessary to protect those at risk. The emphasis on cultural change reveals a deeper understanding of the social dynamics that contribute to domestic violence, highlighting the need for community engagement in overcoming this pervasive issue.
