Moraes orders search and installation of electronic ankle bracelet on the 6th target of the investigation into data leaks

A Brazilian federal police operation targeting individuals involved in leaking sensitive data from the Supreme Court led to the installation of electronic ankle bracelets on new suspects.

The Brazilian Federal Police executed a search and seizure warrant pertaining to an investigation into the leak of sensitive data from members of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) and their relatives. Issued by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, who oversees the investigation, the warrant targeted an individual in Rio de Janeiro, marking the latest development in this significant case. Prior to this, Moraes had also mandated similar measures against a Serpro employee, which is a state-owned data processing company, who was assigned to the Federal Revenue agency, and a security guard at the tax authority’s building.

The ongoing inquiry aims to unravel how confidential data of STF ministers were accessed and unlawfully disseminated. Notably, on the 17th, federal police launched a crackdown involving four suspects. Among them was Luiz Antônio Martins Nunes, a Serpro staff member reportedly found to have improperly accessed federal systems and leaked sensitive information to third parties. The investigation underscores the growing concern over the security of judicial data in Brazil, furthering public scrutiny of the protection measures in place for authorities and their families.

This wave of arrests and electronic monitoring reflects the Brazilian government's serious approach to handling breaches of data privacy, particularly concerning judicial figures. As additional information about the investigation emerges, it remains essential for authorities to fortify data security protocols to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future, highlighting the need for stringent oversight and accountability within governmental data handling frameworks.
