Two teenagers rescued from the ice on the Lielupe River in Jelgava

Two teenagers were rescued from the ice on the Lielupe River in Jelgava after being stranded when the ice became unsafe due to melting conditions.

In Jelgava, Latvia, two teenagers were safely rescued from the ice of the Lielupe River on Monday after they found themselves in a perilous situation roughly 20 meters from the shore. The State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) received an alert around 5 PM about the minors being stranded as a water channel had developed at the riverbank, rendering the ice unstable and dangerous. Upon arrival, the rescue team used a rescue board to bring the teenagers back to safety on solid ground.

The VUGD has stressed the dangers associated with being on ice as temperatures rise and icing conditions worsen. As reported, the melting ice becomes fragile and can easily break, with streams of water from the melting snow lifting and fracturing the ice, creating hazardous situations. It is imperative, especially during thaw periods, for individuals to stay aware of the risks posed by such activities on icy surfaces.

In response to this incident, VUGD is urging parents and educators to engage in discussions with children regarding the perils associated with walking on ice as winter progresses toward thawing periods. This serves as a cautionary reminder about the potential dangers present during the transition from winter to spring, stressing the importance of safety and awareness during outdoor activities involving ice.
