Teenager Rescued from Ice in Liepāja
A teenager was rescued from the sea in Liepāja after falling through the ice on a Monday evening.
On a Monday evening in Liepāja, Latvia, emergency services were alerted to a teenager who had fallen through ice in the sea, approximately 400 meters from the shore near Katedrāles Street. Witnesses at the scene assisted the teenager in reaching the shore, where firefighters from the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) provided further aid and transported the individual to an ambulance waiting for emergency medical services. The incident highlights the dangers associated with being on ice, especially during prolonged periods of low temperatures.
In addition to the icy rescue operation, VUGD also received a call just before five in the afternoon related to an individual lost in the woods in Rembates municipality, Ogres district. Emergency responders utilized a quad bike to navigate the forest, successfully locating the person and leading them to safety. This operation underscores the range of emergency services that are provided, highlighting their critical role in ensuring public safety in various situations.
Over the past 24 hours, VUGD reported a total of 70 emergency calls, which included 11 related to fire extinguishing, 35 focused on rescue operations, and 24 were classified as false alarms. These statistics reflect the ongoing challenges faced by emergency services, as they must effectively respond to genuine emergencies while managing resources against a backdrop of false alarms and non-critical calls.
