Bus stolen in Maricá
A bus from the E-27 line was stolen in Maricá, Brazil, while the driver took a restroom break, but was recovered a few hours later.
In Maricá, Brazil, a bus belonging to the E-27 line connecting Inoã to Chácara de Inoã was stolen on the night of Saturday, the 28th. The incident occurred while the bus was parked near the Inoã pedestrian walkway and was empty of passengers at the time. The theft happened when the driver briefly left the vehicle to use the restroom and was conversing with a dispatcher when a thief entered the bus and drove off.
Upon realizing the bus had been stolen, the driver quickly activated an SOS button, which is a new emergency feature implemented by the public transport company. The Integrated Center of the Citizen Security Secretariat began to monitor the bus's route immediately after the SOS alert was triggered. The tracking system indicated that the bus was heading along the RJ-114, also known as Estrada do Lagarto, which connects Maricá to Itaboraí. Subsequently, the information was communicated to the 35th Police Battalion.
The swift actions taken by the driver and the monitoring team led to the recovery of the stolen bus hours later in the Reta Velha neighborhood of Itaboraí. This incident highlights the importance of emergency response systems in public transportation and raises questions about the security measures in place for such vehicles in metropolitan areas like Rio de Janeiro.
