Passenger arrested after vandalizing bus on Avenida Brasil for driver not stopping outside of designated stops
A passenger was arrested for vandalizing a bus after the driver refused to stop at an unauthorized location on Avenida Brasil in Rio de Janeiro.
On the evening of Thursday, the 19th, a man was detained for vandalizing a bus that was traveling along Avenida Brasil in the Caju area of North Rio. Witnesses reported that the incident occurred after the bus driver refused to stop at a non-designated point, which led to the passenger's frustration. The bus belonged to Viação Pavunense and was operating on the 384 line route, which utilizes a selective lane that does not allow stops outside of predetermined stops, contributing to the tension during the event.
According to the bus driver, Rodrigo Viana dos Santos, the situation escalated quickly as the passenger became irate upon receiving the driver's refusal to stop. The man vandalized the bus by breaking the door, attempting to shatter a window, and damaging other components of the vehicle. This dangerous behavior not only posed a risk to the passengers on board but also to those in nearby vehicles, given that shards from a broken window could potentially injure others.
Photos taken at the scene document the extent of the damage, including a broken door and a destroyed trash bin. Passengers described the moments as tense and chaotic, expressing feelings of indignation and fear in light of the vandalism. The incident highlights underlying issues with public transportation services and passenger frustrations, raising questions about bus stop regulations and passenger rights in such situations.
