Civil Defense inspects residential building affected by fire in Salvador and says that structure can be preserved

The Salvador Civil Defense conducted an inspection of a residential building damaged by a fire and explosion, stating that while some areas will need partial demolition, the overall structure can be preserved.

On Sunday, the Salvador Civil Defense (Codesal) and the Fire Department inspected a residential building in the Stiep neighborhood, which was severely damaged by an explosion followed by a large fire on the previous Friday. The examination revealed significant structural issues, particularly on the right side of Block 105A, where the second and third floors were compromised and will require partial demolition. Despite these damages, officials noted that the overall integrity of the building remains intact, allowing for potential preservation of the structure.

A follow-up structural assessment is scheduled for Monday, led by a structural engineer tasked with producing a technical report on the building’s condition. The ongoing efforts to dismantle the unstable parts of the building are being carried out by the local Department of Urban Development. This comprehensive evaluation aims to ensure safety for residents and adjacent structures while considering options for rehabilitation of the compromised building.

The incident highlights the importance of emergency response and structural safety evaluations in urban environments, particularly following incidents that may endanger public safety. The Civil Defense's proactive measures and the initiation of further assessments reflect a commitment to maintaining housing stability in Salvador amidst the challenges faced by residential infrastructure.
