The law will require municipalities to apply funding criteria to private sports schools as well, but Sigulda rejects the equal approach

The municipality of Sigulda has rejected a demand from residents to fund a private football school on the same principles as municipal sports schools, amid concerns of political reluctance to address the issue.

Residents of Sigulda have expressed dissatisfaction with the local government's decision to reject their demand for funding equalization between a private football school and municipal sports schools. Experts consulted by LTV suggest that this decision reflects a political unwillingness from the municipality to properly consider residents’ requests. The current draft of the sports law, scheduled to take effect on July 1, 2026, could allow municipalities to provide greater support for youth sports, yet there is skepticism regarding its successful implementation.
