Warning issued to National Examination Authority for not accommodating a visually impaired student in exam tasks
Lithuania's National Examination Authority received a warning for failing to provide appropriate exam materials for a visually impaired student during a mathematics exam.
In a recent report by the Equal Opportunities Ombudsman of Lithuania, it was highlighted that a visually impaired student faced significant challenges during the mathematics state exam in June last year due to inadequate accommodations. The student received examination tasks in Braille and in a 'Word' format; however, they could not solve the 'Word' format tasks because many equations and inequalities were unreadable with their screen reader software. Additionally, the Braille tasks contained diagrams that did not meet standard requirements, compounding the difficulties faced by this student.
The student further explained that they were unable to take a practice math exam, which likely would have provided necessary exposure to the exam format. The lack of essential information in the Braille math textbook used by the student contributed to their preparation challenges, making it difficult to study effectively. Furthermore, the complaint drew attention to the 'Eduka' platform, utilized by many students, which reportedly does not provide adequately adapted textbooks for visually impaired students, creating additional barriers for these learners.
This situation raises serious concerns about inclusivity and equal access to educational resources and assessments for students with disabilities in Lithuania. The warning issued to the National Examination Authority indicates that systemic changes are necessary to ensure that all students can participate equally in national examinations, reflecting a commitment to equality and fairness in education. Authorities must now address these shortcomings to prevent similar issues from affecting other students in the future.
