‘A Sanctuary of Healing and Peace’ Above the Site of the 4·3 Massacre... “Inviting the Pope Next Year”

A new church dedicated to healing and peace will be built on the site of the historic 4·3 massacre in Jeju, South Korea, with plans to invite the Pope for the opening.

On March 28, a ceremony was held at the Jungmun Catholic Church in Seogwipo, where Bishop Moon Chang-woo of the Jeju Diocese announced the commencement of construction for a new sanctuary intended to serve as a place of healing and peace. This new church will be built on a site that holds deep historical wounds from the 1948-1949 4·3 massacre, where 71 innocent residents, including children and the elderly, were brutally killed.

The project aims to transform the painful history associated with the location into a sacred space for prayer and remembrance. The Jungmun Church, which has been a focal point for mourning and reflection on the 4·3 incident, is expanding from its original structure built in 1957, which was designated as a commemorative church in 2018. The local community, which has a long history of supporting victims and honoring their memory, is enthusiastic about the expansion, as articulated by Father Ko Byeong-su, who emphasized the need for a larger and more inclusive environment for all who seek peace and love.

Set to be completed in July 2024, the new sanctuary will include various spaces dedicated to remembering the 4·3 massacre, symbolizing a commitment to ensuring that such tragedies do not occur again. The church's mission is to awaken the conscience of those who visit, reinforcing the importance of historical memory and communal healing in the face of past atrocities.
