31 Years of Prayer for Inter-Korean Reconciliation... 1500th 'Reconciliation Mass' by the Catholic Church
The Catholic Archdiocese of Seoul celebrated the 1500th 'Mass for National Reconciliation and Unity' as a symbol of ongoing prayers for peace between North and South Korea over the past 31 years.
The Catholic Archdiocese of Seoul has held the 'Mass for National Reconciliation and Unity' weekly for 31 years, marking the 1500th service as a significant milestone in the ongoing prayers for peace on the Korean Peninsula. The mass took place at Myeongdong Cathedral on the evening of the 10th, led by Archbishop Jung Soon-taek, with notable attendees including Archbishop Giovanni Battista Pizzaballa, Minister of Unification Jeong Dong-yong, and over 400 faithful congregants.
During the sermon, Archbishop Jung highlighted the exceptional commitment of the Catholic Church in Korea to consistently pray for reunification, emphasizing the immense importance of peace and reconciliation in the face of historical conflicts and ongoing tensions between the two Koreas. He acknowledged the challenges of dialogue but reiterated that striving for understanding and reconciliation is a courageous act rather than a sign of weakness. He urged the community to reflect on their own biases and to view each other as brothers and neighbors, as this perspective is fundamental for changing entrenched relationships.
A ceremonial event was held to commemorate the 1500th mass, with Father Jeong Su-yong presenting a report on the history of the mass and Minister Jeong delivering a congratulatory address. He expressed gratitude for being part of the service dedicated to reconciliation and renewal and recognized the steadfast faith and dedication that have persevered through times of silence and division. The celebration extends beyond the religious context, signaling a continued commitment to peace during a time marked by uncertainty in inter-Korean relations.
