‘The First 1 Province 1 National University of South Korea’... Official Launch of Integrated Gangwon University
Gangwon University has officially launched as the first ‘1 Province 1 National University’ in South Korea after integrating with Kangwon National University of Technology.
Gangwon University has officially become South Korea's first '1 Province 1 National University' by integrating with Kangwon National University of Technology. This integration has resulted in the formation of a large-scale national public university with a total of 30,000 students and 1,400 faculty members, spread across four campuses located in Chuncheon, Gangneung, Samcheok, and Wonju. Each campus will cater to the industrial specialties of its respective region, thereby facilitating tailored education and research opportunities.
The university will operate under a unique ‘multicampus’ system, with each campus focusing on distinct areas of education and research. Chuncheon will specialize in precision medicine, bio-health, and data industries, while Gangneung will develop its strengths in new materials and marine bio fields, tourism, and sports. Samcheok will focus on energy-related fields such as liquefied hydrogen and disaster prevention industries, and Wonju will concentrate on semiconductors and smart manufacturing. The administrative structure is based on a ‘1+4 system’, with one main president overseeing the entire university and four campus presidents managing their respective academic affairs.
In its commitment to enhance educational quality and to address gaps in local development, Gangwon University plans to introduce advanced educational programs and systems, including a 'top-class integrated department program' for larger academic departments and AI-based learning systems. The university aims to cultivate practical talents in high-tech sectors such as AI, semiconductors, and defense industry through a problem-based learning model and active community engagement, building on its previous recognition as a 'specialized local university' committed to the balanced development of the Gangwon region.
