Young man with a name almost identical to that of a suspect in a collective rape in Copacabana says he is being confused and reports threats
A young man in Brazil is facing threats after being mistaken for a different individual accused of a serious crime.
A 21-year-old former rowing athlete, João Gabriel Bertho, has found himself in a precarious situation after being confused with a 19-year-old suspect, João Gabriel Xavier Bertho, accused of participating in a collective rape of a 17-year-old girl in Copacabana. The striking similarity in their names, combined with the nature of the crime, has led to an alarming rise in online threats directed at João Gabriel Bertho, compelling him and his family to alter their daily lives drastically.
Melissa Salgado, the mother of the young man, revealed that their family is now living in fear, having to hide from threats proliferating on social media. Disturbingly, groups online are sharing images of her son, inciting violence against him due to the association with the accused. The family has undertaken measures to clarify the situation, even putting up large photos of João Gabriel Bertho to distinguish him from the actual suspect, given their close proximity in age and the identical names.
Despite being relatively known in their neighborhood, Melissa expressed that the threats have necessitated a complete upheaval of their lives, leading them to fear for their safety. The incident highlights critical issues of mistaken identity and the potential dangers posed by social media platforms, especially regarding matters of serious public concern like violent crimes, where the wrong person can become a target due to unfortunate coincidences.
