Sofia Goggia won the giant slalom in Soldeus, marking her second victory of the season and solidifying her lead in the World Cup standings.
In the women’s alpine skiing World Cup event in Soldeus, Italian skier Sofia Goggia clinched victory in the giant slalom with a time of 1:25.95, surpassing Germany's Emma Aicher by 0.24 seconds and Norway's Kajsa Vickhoff Lied by 0.31 seconds. This win signifies Goggia's second triumph in giant slalom this season, with her first victory occurring just before Christmas in Val d'Isère, France. The victory comes as a welcome consolation after her recent Olympic Games giant slalom performance was interrupted.
With a total of 420 points, Goggia now leads the giant slalom standings in the World Cup series, positioning her well as the season approaches its conclusion. New Zealand's Alice Robinson trails her by 84 points after finishing seventh in Soldeus. The race showcased a competitive field, with Goggia not only defeating Aicher and Vickhoff Lied but also placing ahead of notable competitors such as Switzerland's Corinne Suter and Italy's Laura Pirovano, further emphasizing her dominance in the discipline.
Next week, the top female alpine skiers will gather in Val di Fassa, Italy, where they will compete in two downhill races and another giant slalom. This upcoming schedule presents a critical opportunity for Goggia to extend her points lead and secure the coveted crystal globe for the overall giant slalom champion as the season nears its end, showcasing the ongoing excitement in women's alpine skiing competition.
