Cyclist accidents in Natal increased by 46% in 2025, says STTU

Bicycle accidents in Natal surged by 46% in 2025, with three fatalities reported, according to local urban mobility authorities.

According to data from Natal's Urban Mobility Secretariat (STTU), bicycle accidents in the city rose sharply by 46% in 2025 compared to the previous year. Last year, there were three reported deaths and 37 injuries resulting from these incidents, a stark increase from 20 accidents and four deaths documented in 2024. The increase highlights significant safety concerns for cyclists in the area, particularly in light of recent tragedies involving riders.

The most problematic areas for cyclist safety in Natal have been identified as the North Zone, specifically along Avenida João Medeiros Filho and the BR-101 North highway. The city has faced heightened scrutiny regarding cyclist safety, especially after the tragic death of ophthalmologist Araken Britto, who was struck by a truck while cycling. Following his death, public discussions regarding cyclist safety were sparked, yet progress has been minimal according to local cyclist advocacy groups.

Daniel Russo, a representative from the Cyclists Association of RN, mentioned that while there was initial interest from public authorities to engage in dialogues about improving cyclist safety, the outcomes of those meetings have not resulted in impactful changes or arrangements. The situation requires urgent attention to implement effective safety measures and ensure a safe environment for cyclists in Natal, underscoring an ongoing urban mobility challenge within the city.
