The subway tunnel under Paulista enters a critical phase with foundation cuts
The construction of a subway tunnel under Avenida Paulista in São Paulo is entering a critical phase, with preparations for cutting foundations beginning in March.
In São Paulo, the subway tunnel project, which connects the Consolação and Paulista stations, is nearing 75% completion and is set to enter a crucial phase in the coming days. The project, which started earlier in 2023, has a total budget of R$ 60.9 million and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The tunneling aims to improve pedestrian access between the two subway stations along the bustling Avenida Paulista, a key intersection in the city's public transport network.
As part of this critical phase, preparations will begin in March for the cutting of five foundation piles from the technical building of the Paulista station. This step is essential for the advancement of the tunnel designed to accommodate a high capacity of 18,000 people per hour. Project leader Andréia Cristina Rodrigues highlighted the critical engineering phase known as load transfer, where a subterranean structure will be created to support the ongoing construction while ensuring safety and structural integrity.
This tunneling project is significant not only for enhancing the metropolitan transit system but also for the urban landscape of São Paulo, particularly in the vibrant and densely populated area of Avenida Paulista. Successful completion of this project is anticipated to ease pedestrian traffic and improve overall connectivity between vital transit points in one of Brazil's largest cities, reflecting broader trends in urban infrastructure development across the region.
